Homophobic robocalls opposing gay marriage in Illinois originating in Iowa
A DailyKos diarist who is a former resident of Iowa and Illinois received a robocall from the Iowa-based number (515) 724-7047 falsely warning that civilization will end if same-sex couples are allowed to marry in Illinois.
Marriage equality is coming to Illinois sooner than later. President Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have both pushed for Democrats in the Illinois General Assembly to enact legislation that would legalize same-sex marriages in Illinois. Even Pat Brady, the chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, has thrown his support behind legalizing same-sex marriages, drawing strong opposition from conservative activists and organizations that have even called for Brady to resign the chairmanship of the Illinois GOP!
The Iowa-based number (515) 724-7047 has been used for other right-wing robocalls in the past, including robocalls opposing Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio.
The bigots have tried to repeal marriage equality in Iowa, to no avail. An Iowa Supreme Court justice won a retention election despite being targeted by the bigots, and Democrats retained control of the Iowa State Senate despite the fact that several Democratic Iowa State Senators, including Democratic floor leader Mike Gronstal, were targeted by the bigots. So, they’re now trying to stop marriage equality in Illinois. As an Illinoisan who supported the failed recall attempt against Republican Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and his allies in the Wisconsin State Legislature, I can speak from experience that it’s very difficult for outside forces to meddle around in another state’s politics.
